Polands deposit return system (kaucja) was launched last year. Stores charge 0.50 PLN for plastic bottles/cans and 1 PLN for glass, refunded via reverse vending machines (butelkomaty). It created widespread frustration. Machines frequently break, jam, overflow, forcing long queues or hunts for working ones.

Significant parts of society turned into trashmen. Kids, Ukrainians, pensioners and the poor scour streets, bins and parks for deposit bottles, carrying heavy bags between stores for tiny refunds. One Ukrainian teen returned over 3,000 for nearly €400 in one day breaking the countrys record xD

Absurdities pile up. Damaged labels or no special mark mean no refund, even for clean bottles. Transition chaos mixes deposit and non-deposit packaging. Loopholes let firms sell 3.001L bottles to dodge rules, etc etc.

Machines reject slightly crushed or dirty items. Vouchers tie refunds to specific chains, and rural areas lack access entirely. Costs rose for stores and producers with complaints of inefficiency versus simple curbside recycling so problems grow in Bolanda.

Vid-rel: Ukrainian businessmen earning their daily honey xD
