When I was a kid, my father agreed to drive one of our black class mates and his mom home after a field trip where she was a chaperone. Wasn’t a far drive and she was a nice lady who helped out at the school so he happily obliged. Anyway, we drove just a few blocks south and pull into the neighborhood. Black children everywhere. We drop them off.

My siblings and I had never seen that many black people. Windows are rolled down because it’s a hot summer day. My little brother shouts: Holy shit, that’s a lot of niggers!” And my father yells into the backseat: “Shut the fuck up!” And we get the hell outta there.

Still makes me laugh to think about. I’ll have to call my family and retell this one.
