Old friend from high school. Always invited me to his house parties. Always felt bad for the guy so I’ve always been a friend since he has so few. Poor kid grew up without a single father figure and, fuck, does it show. Hell, he’s really become a cautionary tale generator and case study example for me and my closer pals.

Anyway, some years back, he’s working cashier at some fancy grocery store. Tells me he’s become good friends with a cute girl that works there. He starts telling me he’s interested in her romantically.

“That’s great, dude! Tell me more.” I exclaim.

“Well, we’re really good friends, so I’m basically going to tell her how I feel and say; Id like to be boyfriend and girlfriend.”

I explain: “Don’t fucking do that. Court her. Lead. Ask her out for coffee or dinner. But DO NOT do

that.”

“Nah, man. I like to be open, honest, and genuine. I’m going to put all my cards on the table and ask her to be my girlfriend.”

He explains.

After much back and forth, I warned him that if doesn’t have the courage to lead and play the game, he’s going to destroy his friendship and make it uncomfortable and awkward as hell between them. Anyway, a few weeks go by and I inquire as to how it went. He destroyed that friendship and she no longer speaks to him.

40 year old virgin. Poor fool needs to go to prison or join the military because he is such a hopeless cause. I pointed him in the direction of some pickup videos but he insists that his methods are successful. 40 year old kid has never had a girlfriend. I try to steer him right but that horse never sips from the pond.

Brutal. Train wreck. One day, I will tell tales of him to my own sons on what not to do. Poor soul.
