was coming home from fishing on the columbia when an unlicensed black man crossed in front of a family of mexicans traveling at 80mph on hwy 17 in eastern washington. i was traveling at 80 in the opposite direction as the mexican family, they were in an acura sedan. they smashed into tyrones kia at a 45 degree angle which launched their car into my lane about 30 feet in front of me. a head on collision at 160 collective mph would have killed me and the mexican family with their baby. the only thing that saved me was that i was driving a 1992 corvette that i’ve been fixing up. this car was is so responsive that when i jerked the wheel it leapt ten feet to the right, avoiding a head on collision. they clipped my rear wheel and tore off half of my rear bumper.the hit nudged my rear end just enough to change my trajectory and allowed me to jerk the wheel to the left and avoid both a telephone and light pole and shoot back onto the main highway. the acura continued on and ended up about 300 feet in a corn field. i remember clearly only having the time to say “oh, shi…” before the collision. i slowed to a stop about 1000 feet past the intersection, took a brief inventory, drove a few feet to see if it was possible to move, then flipped around and went back to the intersection. the black guy was standing there like a hamster. the mexican family was getting out of the acura and tending to their little one. it was a miracle we were all alive. after all the formalities were over i said to the trooper that showed up “i should be dead right now, shouldnt i?”. all he said was “yeah”, then shook my hand. i duct taped the trailing bumper back to the car then continued about 500 more miles home. the wheel was slightly bent but it was still balanced. the tire wasnt even flat. that is a damned good car, i intend to fix it and drive it forever. as i was leaving i said to tyrone “you almost got me today, better luck next time”.
