We’ve clearly entered the “Winter” phase of our civilization, and are strongly exhibiting all four interconnected forces of the end.
In his seminal 1918 work, The Decline of the West, German philosopher Oswald Spengler argues that nations and civilizations do not “collapse” in a sudden, catastrophic event, but rather undergo a predictable, cyclical phase of protracted decline. Spengler rejected the idea of linear progress, viewing civilizations as living organisms that experience a natural life cycle of birth, growth, maturity, and death.
According to Spengler’s historical framework, the “collapse” or “going under” (Untergang) of a nation occurs through four interconnected forces during its final “Winter” phase:
- Urban Alienation and Megacities
As a civilization enters its final stage, the traditional, instinct-driven culture of the countryside is replaced by massive urban centers. Spengler predicted the rise of giant megacities (naming New York, Paris, and London) that would absorb the essence of history, reducing the rest of the nation to mere provinces. In these sprawling cities, life becomes hyper-intellectual, transactional, and detached from traditional folkways, creating an anonymized mass with no shared identity.
- Demographic Collapse (“Sterility”)
Spengler identified a symptom he called the “sterility of civilized man”. As a society becomes highly intellectualized and materialistic, people begin to view life through a lens of economic calculation rather than natural instinct.
