Dr. Idris Evans, 46, a pediatric critical care physician and medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was fatally stabbed in his home in the 100 block of Linden Avenue in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, early on September 24, 2026. Allegheny County police responded around 12:30 a.m. after a report of a stabbing. Officers found Evans and his wife with multiple stab wounds. Both were transported to hospitals in critical condition. Evans was later pronounced dead. His wife remained in critical condition. Police said 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway entered the home and attacked the couple while they slept. Evans’ wife told investigators they awoke to the attack, fought back, and that she escaped, alerted their two young children, and fled to a neighbor’s home. A police K-9 unit located Hemingway hiding behind a nearby house with cuts on his hand. He was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. Court records show Hemingway was arrested in July 2026 on two felony charges of burglary and theft by unlawful taking stemming from a February incident in which he allegedly forced entry into an ex-partner’s home and stole a laptop and two cell phones. He was released on nonmonetary bond.
