I like to listen to podcasts while I clean or drive or walk the dog and last night I listened to a 48 hours story about the murder of prosecutor Steve Tauzer of Bakersfield, California. He was very powerful in the community there and had lots of political pull.

He had befriended a police officer named Chris Hillis and also became close to the whole family. Sadly one of the Hillis sons Lance became a meth addict as a teen and was constantly in trouble with the law. Eventually the father decided the only way he was ever going to get clean was to hit rock bottom and serve some time so he could get clean. He pushed for him to get a sentence after yet another arrest and failed stint at a rehab. Friend Tauzer the prosecutor however pulled strings with the judge and convinced him to just get rehab again, against the family’s wishes. Tauzer even paid for an apartment for the teen where drug fueled parties were held.

It all ended when Lance left rehab, stole a car and died in a high speed crash while using meth.

Five weeks after his death, Prosecutor Tauzer was found murdered in his home. Rumors had been swirling that there was a homosexual relationship between the never married Tauzer and the teen. Some believed that the murder was done by a gay lover but eventually the father Chris Hillis confessed to killing him after confronting Tauzer one night while in the depths of grief over his son’s death. Supposedly he asked Tauzer if he’d been sexually abusing his son and Tauzer said it was “consensual”. After that the father went into a rage and killed him. He pled guilty to manslaughter and served 9 years. That part is shocking to me and I believe he’d likely get life had this happened today.

Anyway, I had to research and you can likely see where this is going, but guess what ethnicity the name Tauzer is most associated with?

Moral of the story is keep your kids away from chosen ones. It will end in tragedy every single time. I ache for this poor father and the pain he fel
