“Jerry Sowood, a 27-year-old Liberian migrant, punched a 10-year-old Australian boy in the head while he was traveling to Melbourne for brain-cancer treatment. When the boy’s mother, Cherie, 46, intervened, Sowood put her in a headlock and repeatedly stabbed her with scissors in front of her three children, aged 10, 11 and 16. The incident took place near Victoria Police headquarters.

Three bystanders jumped on the attacker, pulled him away and held him until police arrived. Victoria Police called their intervention “heroic” and said the attack could have been much worse without them.

In court, Sowood said: “I punched the kid in the head… I took the scissors and I stabbed the woman in the head.” He then argued that he had “kept his humanity” because both victims were still alive.

Cherie suffered a fractured leg and neck-ligament damage.

Doctors are examining whether the attack caused additional inflammation around her son’s brain tumor.”
