The owner of the restaurant comes to me on Wednesday and asked me to make a pan of shepherd’s pie. It’s for a regular customer, their mother recently died and they wanted it for her wake. No problem, right? I make it, I take pride in it. It reminded me of something I haven’t thought about in a long time. My father died on 1/1/2015. After I got the news, I headed over to the family home. The house I grew up in. I wanted to bring some food so nobody had to cook. All my family was going to be there, and none of us really knew how to feel. Stopped at the grocery store and tried to order a sandwich platter. At first they told me they couldn’t do it, it’s new years day. They probably thought it was for a party and I failed to plan ahead. I apologized, and told them it was because my father had just passed. They told me to come back in fifteen minutes, and they didn’t charge me when I did.

It was a small kindness on their part, but in my grief I promptly forgot about it until yesterday when I was making that shepherd’s pie. I was grateful I could do for that family what was done for me. It’s a real pain in the ass to make 20lbs of shepherd’s pie and ten pounds of mashed potatoes. Normally. Yesterday it wasn’t.
