I find that many don’t realize Salvation Army is a religious organization, or especially that they are fundamentally a church. People just see old women ringing bells for collection outside supermarkets. But they do have church services at their various ‘corps’ (they LARP as a military organization, i.e., the Salvation ‘Army’, with full dress uniforms and rank, as in ‘captain’ for him, a ‘corp officer’ and minister). Theologically they are evangelical Wesleyans (that basically means conservative Methodists) so the best I could make out from him, a native Hawaiian with kids with a Scandinavian looking chick, is that they think communion is in some sense a distraction from what evangelicals tend to emphasize - focus on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ rather than be preoccupied with the laws or rituals of Christianity. Usually this stuff among Protestants has some element of anti-Catholicism as well but he didn’t exactly confirm that.Anyone have thoughts here?
